Heritage sale 3029, lot 30793

This specimen was lot 30793 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $2,467.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Papal States. Paolo (Paul) III gold Scudo d'oro (1534-49), Piacenza mint, AU58 NGC. An amazingly well-preserved example. Well-struck on a full flan and with good detail. While not rare, it is also not particularly common, and it would be very hard to find an example in a comparable condition." The expansionist policy of Paul III led him to conquer many of his neighbors and branch mints were set up, most of which proved to be temporary. Friedberg records papal scudi d'oro from Piacenza (shown here), Bologna (Fr-344), Camerino (Fr-396), Parma (Fr-412) and Perugia (Fr-416). We believe the scudo d'oro (gold shield) to be the same denomination as the ducat or zecchino. Friedberg records the first scudo d'oro from this reign.
