Papal States (1534-49) scudo d'oro Fr-412
The first specimen was lot 30682 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Parma. Scudo d'Oro, ND. Paul III (1534-49). NGC VF-30. Somewhat weak center strike but with full legends." The expansionist policy of Paul III led him to conquer many of his neighbors and branch mints were set up, most of which proved to be temporary. Friedberg records papal scudi d'oro from Piacenza (Fr-422), Bologna (Fr-344), Camerino (Fr-396), Parma (shown here) and Perugia (Fr-416). We believe the scudo d'oro (gold shield) to be the same denomination as the ducat or zecchino. Friedberg records the first scudo d'oro from this reign.
