Sincona sale 54, lot 704

This specimen was lot 704 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,380 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Kirchenstaat, Innozenz VIII. 1484-1492. Ducato o. J. Roma. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Leicht unregelmässiger Schrötling. (Papal States, Innocent VIII, 1484-92, undated ducat, Rome mint. Very rare, Very fine, Slightly irregular flan.)"

This type was struck at Rome for pope Innocent VIII. A very similar but much rarer type exists from the Macerata mint (Fr-402). The fiorino (florin) was about 3% lighter than the ducat or zecchino.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.39 g.
