Papal States (1268-78) grosso rinforzato
This specimen was lot 1256 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,706 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RÖMISCHER SENAT, 1184-1439. Grosso rinforzato o. J. (1268-1278), Rom. Prägung des Senators Karl I. von Anjou (2. Senatoriat). + [drei Ringe übereinander] CAROLVS [drei Ringe übereinander] REX [drei Ringe übereinander] SENATOR [drei Ringe übereinander] VRBIS : Löwe schreitet l., den Kopf nach vorn gewandt, darüber französiche Lilie//+ [drei Ringe übereinander] ROmA [drei Ringe übereinander] CAPVD [drei Ringe übereinander] mVNDI [drei Ringe übereinander] S [drei Ringe übereinander] P [drei Ringe übereinander] Q : R [drei Ringe übereinander] Roma thront v. v. mit Globus und Palmzweig, der Thron mit einem Löwen- und Menschenkopf verziert. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Papal States, senatorial issue, 1184-1439, undated reinforced grosso, circa 1268-78, Rome mint, struck by Charles of Anjou as senator (second term). Obverse: lion rampant left, French fleur-de-lys below; reverse: Roma enthroned facing, with orb and palm branch, the throne decorated with lion's heads and human heads. Charles of Anjou, brother of Louis IX of France, was senator of Rome 1263-66, 1268-78 and 1281-84. This grosso rinforzato was struck to a restored standard.
