This specimen was lot 2194 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "PANAMA. 100 Balboas, 1980-FM. Franklin Mint. NGC MS-68. Commemorating the centennial of the Panama Canal. From a mintage of only 77 pieces. One of just two examples at this numeric grade with only one piece certified finer. Prooflike and brilliant, highly attractive. From the Richard Stuart Collection." This denomination was first used for medium gold commemoratives in 1975 and the Franklin Mint issued all of them until 1985. Unfortunately, collecting Panamanian coins lost its popularity after the Franklin mint overissued proof sets and commemoratives in the 1970's and 1980's. For years, few Panamanian coins sold for more than melt.

Recorded mintage: 77 plus 2,468 proofs.

Specification: 7.13 g, 0.500 fine gold, .113 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-14; KM-67; CNP- Type #65.
