Panama 1980-CHI 200 balboas
This specimen was lot 73487 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "PANAMA. Platinum 200 Balboas, 1980-CHI. Switzerland (Valcambi) Mint. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Featuring a boxer and styling Panama as the land of champions, this nearly-flawless example radiates with exceptional eye appeal." This denomination was used for platinum commemoratives in 1979-80 by the Valcambi Mint. Unfortunately, collecting Panamanian coins lost its popularity after the Franklin mint overissued proof sets and commemoratives in the 1970's and 1980's. For years, few Panamanian coins sold for more than melt.
Recorded mintage: 219.
Specification: 9.93 g, 0.980 fine platinum, 0.2940 troy oz APW.
