Panama 1974-FM 20 balboas
This specimen was lot 1255 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $142.80. The catalog description[1] noted, "Panama (struck by the Franklin Mint), 20 balboas, 1974, Simon Bolivar, NGC PF 68 Ultra Cameo. Slab size about 6-1/2" x 5". Practically flawless, with no marks or lines or wear of any kind, tiny streak of toning on part of reverse rim. NGC #4700603-001. With original Franklin Mint box and certificate dated Feb. 1 1974." This NCLT was issued 1972-76. Unfortunately, collecting Panamanian coins lost its popularity after the Franklin mint overissued proof sets and commemoratives in the 1970's and 1980's. For years, few Panamanian coins sold for more than melt.
Recorded mintage: 99,000 + 161,000 proofs but many melted.
Specification: 129.59 g, 0.925 fine silver, 61 mm diameter, 3.8538 ounces AGW.
