Paderborn 1693 thaler Dav-5712
This specimen was lot 31449 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States. Paderborn. Hermann Werner von Wolff-Metternich Thaler 1693 XF45 PCGS, Neuhaus mint. An elusive one-year issue of which we could not locate any examples offered by major auction companies in the last couple of decades. Displaying a balanced strike and even highpoint wear, this piece is dressed in a light gunmetal tone." All the thalers of Münster and Paderborn are scarce. The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered. This bust thaler was accompanied by Dav-5710 (arms obverse/St. Anthony reverse) for 1693.
