Osnabruck (1637) 2 thaler Dav-B5671
This specimen was lot 563 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €36,000 (about US$50,976 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · OSNABRÜCK, BISTUM Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg, 1625-1661. Dicker doppelter Reichstaler o. J. (um 1637), Münster. · FRANC : GVIL : D · G · S · R · I · PRINC : Brustbild r. in geistlichem Gewand//* EPS - · OSNAB · MINDE - VERD · COM · DE · WART Verziertes, vierfeldiges rundes Wappen (Minden, Verden / Verden, Minden) mit vierfeldigem Mittelschild (Osnabrück/Wartenberg), dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt. Von größter Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 316, Berlin 2019, Nr. 337. (Germany, bishopric of Osnabrück, Francis William of Wartenburg, 1625-61, undated double thaler, circa 1637, Münster mint. Obverse: bust right in bishop's robe; reverse: quartered arms of Minden and Verden with the escutcheon of Osnabrück/Wartenberg impaled, crossed crozier and sword behind. Extremely rare, very fine.)
Dieser Doppeltaler des Bischofs Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg trägt keine Datierung. Er gehört aber auf jeden Fall in die Zeit des Dreißigjährigen Krieges. Ein Jahr nach dem Westfälischen Frieden von Münster und Osnabrück wurde Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg zum Bischof von Regensburg gewählt, dieser Titel fehlt auf unserem Stück. Wegen der großen Ähnlichkeit mit dem datierten Taler von 1637 (Kennepohl 224) liegt es nahe, daß auch dieser undatierte Doppeltaler im Jahre 1637 entstanden ist. Außerdem erwähnen die Probationsakten des Niederrheinisch-Westfälischen Kreises von 1643 bis 1657 keine Prägung aus diesen Jahren. Unser Stück gehört somit zweifellos in die Jahre 1637 bis 1642 und damit in eine Zeit, in der Bischof Franz Wilhelm den Anspruch auf seine Bistümer nur auf den Münzen aufrecht erhalten konnte. Erst der Westfälische Frieden setzte ihn 1648 wieder im Bistum Osnabrück ein. (This double thaler of Bishop Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg bears no date. However, it certainly dates from the Thirty Years' War. One year after the Peace of Westphalia of Münster and Osnabrück, Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg was elected Bishop of Regensburg; this title is missing from our piece. Given its close similarity to the dated thaler of 1637 (Kennepohl 224), it is likely that this undated double thaler was also minted in 1637. Furthermore, the probationary records of the Lower Rhine-Westphalian Circle from 1643 to 1657 do not mention any coins from these years. Our piece therefore undoubtedly dates from 1637 to 1642, a time when Bishop Franz Wilhelm could only maintain his claim to his bishoprics on coins. It was not until the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 that he was reinstated in the Diocese of Osnabrück.)"
The bishops of Osnabrück vacillated in the sixteenth century on their resistance to the Reformation and by the beginning of the Thirty Years War the diocese was largely Lutheran. Francis William imposed the Counterreformation in 1625, called in the Jesuits and started a university. All, including Francis William, were ousted by the Swedes upon their occupation in 1633. Francis William did not return until the coming of peace in 1648. This design appears on a thaler (Dav-5672), a klippe 1½ thaler (Dav-A5671), a klippe double thaler (Dav-C5671) and a triple thaler (Dav-5671).
