This specimen was issued by Oman as part of the F.A.O. series. The obverse honors the date palm. Oman, long a British protectorate, achieved full independence in 1971. Coinage began that year. She has watched enviously as her neighbors, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, harvest billions of dollars by selling oil, of which little occurs in Omani territory.

Recorded mintage: 15,000.
