Sincona sale 26, lot 2685

This specimen was lot 2685 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,471 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Nurnberg, Goldgulden 1513. St. Laurentius. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. Schön ausgeprägt. (Germany, city of Nurnberg, gold gulden of 1513, obverse: St. Laurence. Very rare, good very fine, well struck.)"

This type commenced production about 1429 and was struck undated for several decades. Those produced 1506-47 have dates. The long production run makes this type the most common Nurnberger gold coin prior to the 1640's.

Specification: 3.25 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.22 g.
