Nurnberg (1683-1705)-GH GFN 2 thaler Dav-2472
The first specimen was lot 1069 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €5,250 (about US$6,782 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NÜRNBERG, STADT Doppelter Reichstaler o. J. (nach 1683), mit Titel Leopolds I. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, double thaler without date, in the name of Leopold I. Of the greatest rarity, toned, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 330 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$2,286 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Nürnberg, Stadt. 2 Taler o. J. (nach 1683), Münzmeister Georg Friedrich Nürnberger. Stempelschneider Georg Hautsch. Mit Laubrand. Sehr schön. Felder geglättet. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, undated double thaler, struck after 1683, with laurel wreath. Very Fine, Fields tooled.)"
This rare double thaler was struck towards the end of Leopold's long reign (1658-1705). The obverse was used again for Dav-2473 struck for Joseph I.
