SB924-1179r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1179 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €28,800 (about US$31,916 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Handsome Double Speciedaler with Retained Brilliance, NORWAY. 2 Speciedaler, 1634. Christiania Mint. Christian IV. NGC VF-35. Mintmaster: Anders Pedersen. Extremely rare; only 5 examples have been recorded with two in private collections. The striations, which are common on the thick and hefty multiples, are seen on the obverse but only hinted at on the reverse, which, if graded alone, would easily fetch a much higher grade. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Peter v. Hemmert Collection (Copenhagen - 2/1807) Lot # 614."

The specie daler of 1628 marks the resumption of coinage in Norway after it lapsed in the 1540's. This double specie daler was struck nearly without interruption 1629-48 but all dates are rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 58.46 g, 0.882 fine silver, 42.3 mm diameter, this specimen 57.57 g.
