Heritage sale 3064, lot 31436
Norway H3064-31436r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31436 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $12,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Christian IV Speciedaler 1629 XF45 NGC, Copenhagen mint. Obv. Crowned bust of Christian IV right. Rev. Lion left, holding battle ax, dividing the date 1-6-29. A nicely struck example, with a few light contact marks and slightly mottled gray toning. A much rarer date than one might expect, with this piece the only example certified, in all grades, by NGC and PCGS combined." This daler was struck for Norway by Christian IV, king of Denmark 1588-1648. Despite a steady issue for 1629-48, this type is rare. The weight was reduced to 28.72 g in 1648 and it's possible many of this type were melted.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.23 g, 0.882 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-3534; KM 12; Ahl-28b, Thesen-29, Hede-5A.
