Jean Elsen sale 159, lot 1290

This specimen was lot 1290 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €480 (about US$616 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, NIJMEGEN, Stad, AR arendrijksdaalder, 1569. Met titel van Maximiliaan II. Vz/ Gekroond stadswapen gehouden door twee leeuwen. Jaartal in de afsnede. Kz/ Gekroonde rijksadelaar. Gereinigd. Lichte korrosie op kz. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, city of Nijmegen, silver eagle daalder of 1569, struck in the name of Maximilian II. Obverse: crowned city arms supported by two lions, date in the exergue; reverse: crowned imperial eagle. Cleaned, light corrosion on the obverse, Very fine.)"

Nijmegen, just south of Arnhem, is now part of Gelderland. Coins were issued for Nijmegen throughout the seventeenth century but are scarce compared to the issues of Holland or Utrecht. Davenport lists this type for 1567-70.
