This one year type is common in all grades. Nicaragua, never prosperous, suffered severely in the earthquake of 1972 and the subsequent incompetent and corrupt response by the Somoza regime. In 1979, the Somozas were overthrown by the Sandinistas, an event which led to the notorious Iran-Contra affair. This coin was accompanied by fifty centavos (KM 88) and one cordoba (KM 89). The Sandinistas were ousted in the elections of 1990 by Violeta Chamorro, widow of the assassinated Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal. The Sandinistas returned to power in the elections of 2006 and show no intention of relinquishing it.
