Nicaragua 1892 centavo KM-Pn6
This specimen was lot 75540 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $976. The catalog description[1] noted, "NICARAGUA. Aluminum Centavo Pattern, 1892. NGC SPECIMEN-62 Cameo." We are ignorant of the circumstances of the production of this pattern but the SCWC notes numerous essais (KM E1), piedforts (KM P1 thru P6) and patterns (KM Pn4 thru Pn9), struck in copper, copper-nickel and aluminum. In 1892, aluminum was clearly the metal of the future but its price had not yet fallen to the point where it was practical for coinage. Nicaragua did not have a mint so this was likely made in Europe. Production coinage did not resume until 1898.
