Newfoundland SB518-70367r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70367 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 10 Cents, 1946-C. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Lovely smokey toned with a plethora of iridescent hues. An attractive example with good eye appeal. Ex: Bowers & Merena sale, September 1989, lot 4399." It is a better date of a type struck 1945-47. it has the same design as the ten cent pieces of 1939-44 but is only 0.800 fine silver. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.

Recorded mintage: 38,400 + proofs.

Specification: 2.33 g, 0.800 fine silver.
