Newfoundland 1903 5 cents

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70369

This specimen was lot 70369 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $264. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 5 Cents, 1903. PCGS-62 Secure Holder. Lightly toned satiny surfaces with a nice cartwheel effect." This type was struck in London (shown here) and Heaton 1903, 1904-H and 1908 only. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.
