SB823-51164r.jpg

This specimen was lot 51164 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 20 Cents, 1881. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-63. Surpassed in the PCGS census by just three examples, this wondrous specimen yields a high degree of shimmering brilliance and features an amber-gray tone along with some deeper notes elevating the devices." This type was struck fairly steadily for Newfoundland 1865-1900. It is a trifle heavier than the Canadian twenty cent piece of 1859. This date was struck at London and is scarce tho the most available in high grade. The smallness and poverty of the colony kept mintages low.

Recorded mintage: 60,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 4.71 g, 0.925 fine silver, 0.140 troy oz ASW, 23.2 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 4.
