This specimen was lot 40047 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,232. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 2 Dollars, 1880. PCGS AU-55. Key date. Lightly toned, lustrous." This type was struck for Newfoundland in limited numbers 1865-88 and is fairly available in circulated condition. This date is priced about ten times the common date (1888) in high grade.

Recorded mintage: 2,500.
