Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 21076
SB620-21076r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21076 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $6,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 10 Cents, 1872-H. Heaton Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-67 Gold Shield. An immaculate coin in all respects, this Superb Gem showcases surfaces that are fully struck and unbelievably clean. Light toning, presenting mostly in soft pastel yellow, lilac and blue shades, bestows unrivaled charm upon the obverse, while the reverse is a pale champagne with a few instances of slightly deeper copper color. Quite honestly, a coin that deserves consideration for the unthinkable MS-68 grade, as the few other pristine pieces that have been graded higher (three examples graded MS-67+ exist in the PCGS census), all which are assuredly from the Heaton Mint hoard, don't appear quite the equal of this piece is terms of pure surface preservation. As such, an important opportunity for the condition-focused collector, as this coin is undeniably a marvel to behold! Ex: Heaton Mint Hoard." This specimen is a common date of a type struck in London and Birmingham for the colony of Newfoundland 1865-96. Canada debased her silver dimes from .925 to .800 in 1920 but Newfoundland did not follow suit until 1945. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.

Recorded mintage: 40,000, most common date for Victoria.

Specification: 2.35 g, 0.925 fine silver.
