This specimen was lot 22114 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 5 Cents, 1870. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. Tied for the finest certified of the date with one other example on the PCGS population report, none finer. This eye catching choice Gem uncirculated example boasts a sharp strike with well-defined design elements and handsome frosty devices. Beautiful rich patination radiates from the edges and devices as well as accenting the crevasses adding depth to the intricate motif offering much originality, clearly an example that was plucked from circulation early on and handled with great care. This lovely survivor has many attributes that lots collectors actively pursue; namely grade, rarity and eye appeal. The opportunity to acquire such a desirable piece to add to an advanced collection seldom occurs and serious consideration should be given not to miss out." This type was struck for Newfoundland 1865-1901 and many of the later dates are common. Plain edge proofs exist and are rare.
