The first specimen was lot 23046 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $616.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. 1/2 Penny, 1963. PCGS PROOF-63 RB. VERY RARE. Mintage believed to be between 10-20 pieces. Sharply struck as would be expected and fully lustrous with flashy proof surfaces. Beautiful burgundy tone in the open fields which transitions to a greenish-brown near the edge and just a hit of original mint red hugging portions of the legend of the obverse creating a nice contrast to the devices. The reverse has the same lovely burgundy throughout with hints of original mint red hugging the devices again creating a nice contrast. Quite a lovely example and sure to entice spirited bidding." The second specimen was lot 34590 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[2] noted, "New Zealand: Elizabeth II Proof 1/2 Penny 1963 PR64 Brown PCGS. This coin presents a watery sapphire hue throughout with near gem quality." New Zealand did not receive her own coinage until 1933, British coins being used heretofore. Issue of pennies and half pennies did not begin until 1940. This type, with a visible shoulder fold in the queen's dress, was minted 1956-65. All dates are common but proofs are rare. The coinage was decimalized in 1967.

Recorded mintage: 1,680,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 5.6 g, bronze, 25.4 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-23.2.
