from the Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 23365

This specimen was lot 23365 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Florin, 1949. PCGS MS-64+ Gold Shield. An exceedingly sublime piece, this enchanting specimen is about as close as one can get to Gem status. Lightly toned and highly brilliant, it represents the finest graded by PCGS. From the Fenton Collection." This florin struck for George VI retained the kiwi reverse introduced with George V. In 1948, the obverse was revised from "GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR" to "KING GEORGE THE SIXTH", and struck in that form until 1951. The denomination was terminated upon decimalization in 1965.

Recorded mintage: 3,500,000 plus proofs.
