New Zealand 1947 3 pence
This specimen was lot 30399 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI Proof 3 Pence 1947 PR65 Cameo NGC. Mintage: Est. 20. A single-year copper-nickel striking of the 'George VI King Emperor' legend variety, rendered in rarely seen proof format, with premium surfaces for the grade and light cameo contrast that aids the eye-appeal. To date, the only example of this extremely low-mintage 'proof of record' to have been certified at the 'Cameo' tier by NGC." New Zealand did not receive her own coinage until 1933, British coins being used heretofore. Issue of pennies and half pennies did not begin until 1940. This is a common issue, struck 1947 only but the proofs are rare. In 1948 the obverse legend was revised to "KING GEORGE THE SIXTH." The denomination was terminated upon decimalization in 1965-66.
