This specimen was lot 30397 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI Proof Penny 1940 PR65 Red and Brown NGC. Highly attractive, with stunning red-brown surfaces that present oil-slick iridescence. An extremely rare date with a reported mintage of only 5 pieces. At present time, there are only four certified examples in existence, this one by NGC and three others by PCGS. Even so, this is the only coin with a red-brown designation." New Zealand did not receive her own coinage until 1933, British coins being used heretofore. Issue of pennies and half pennies did not begin until 1940. This is a common date of a type struck 1940-47 but the proofs are rare.

Recorded mintage: 5,424,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 9.6 g, bronze, 30.6 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-13.
