New Zealand 1881 penny token KM-Tn52
This specimen was lot 3131 in Goldberg sale 98 (Los Angeles, June 2017), where it sold for $164.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "New Zealand. Penny Token, 1881. Milner & Thompson. Angel head above musical instruments. Reverse: Legend. NGC graded MS-63. WINGS." The SCWC comments, "Because of a shortage of British money, New Zealand merchant tokens were issued beginning in 1857. There were some 147 varieties issued in 10 cities, although the majority were issued in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin." This is a very late issue as most tokens were made 1857-61, which may explain why this is among the more common types.
Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat common.
Specification: bronze, 32 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-TN52.
