This specimen was lot 24567 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Timaru. Clarkson & Turnbull. Penny Token, 1865. NGC AU-58 BN.Rarity 4. Ship in port, 'New Zealand' above, 'Timaru' in exergue; Reverse: 'General Importers Drapers Clothiers & c.' within beaded boarder, 'Clarkson and Turnbull.1865.' around. A lovely lightly circulated example with hints of original mint red hugging the central devices of the obverse and mottled patina on the reverse. From the James Heegeman Collection." The SCWC comments, "Because of a shortage of British money, New Zealand merchant tokens were issued beginning in 1857. There were some 147 varieties issued in 10 cities, although the majority were issued in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin."

Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.
