New Zealand (1860-64) penny token KM-Tn11
This specimen was lot 24549 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Christchurch. J. Caro & Co. Penny Token, ND (1860-64). By: Stokes Melb. NGC MS-62 BN. Rarity 3-4. Man plowing field left, 'Trade and Agriculture' above 'Stokes Melb.' at feet; Reverse: 'J. Caro & Co. High St.' within solid border, 'General Ironmongers: Christchurch:' around. Attractive with a nice strike and pleasing patina. From the James Heegeman Collection." The SCWC comments, "Because of a shortage of British money, New Zealand merchant tokens were issued beginning in 1857. There were some 147 varieties issued in 10 cities, although the majority were issued in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin."
