New Zealand 1862 penny token KM-Tn5
This specimen was part of lot 24530 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), which sold for $252. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Auckland. H. Ashton. Date and Variety Set of Penny Tokens, 1862 & 1863. 4 pieces in lot. Rarity 2-5. All share similar designs with minor differences in the legends such as large and small letters. Standing justice left holding scale and cornucopia, 'New Zealand' above, date in exergue; Reverse: 'Importer of Haberdashery & Tailors Trimmings' at center in six-lines, 'H. Ashton Queen St. Auckland' around. Each exhibits varying degrees of light to moderate circulation consistent with their perspective grades. All are have attractive even patina from a lovely caramel to Pecan to brown. All are graded by NGC. From the James Heegeman Collection." The SCWC comments, "Because of a shortage of British money, New Zealand merchant tokens were issued beginning in 1857. There were some 147 varieties issued in 10 cities, although the majority were issued in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin."
