Neuss 1539 thaler Dav-9593
This specimen was lot 1235 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €300 (about US$406 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, NEUSS, Ville, AR Taler, 1539. D/ Saint Quirin deb. de f., t. à d., entre les écus de Cologne et Neuss, ten. une bannière. R/ Aigle impériale éployée. Rare Avec bélière. Beau à Très Beau. (Germany, city of Neuss, thaler of 1539. Obverse: St. Quirin stands facing, head right, between the arms of Cologne and Neuss, holding a banner; reverse: imperial eagle displayed. Rare, with mount, Fine - Very Fine.)"
Neuss is today an insignificant town in the Ruhr valley of Germany. It was formerly part of the Archbishopric of Cologne who granted the town the mint right. This type is listed for 1539, 1545, 1551, 1554-58 but most dates are not priced in the SCWC. Coinage ended in the 1580's.
