Sincona sale 64, lot 3459

This specimen was lot 3459 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$407 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Neuenburg/Neuchâtel | Fürsten von Neuchâtel. Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1805 und 1814-1840. Halbbatzen 1803, Neuchâtel. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. (principality of Neuchatel, Frederick William III, 1797-1805 and 1814-40, half batzen of 1803, Neuchatel mint. Rare in this condition, Uncirculated.)"

The canton of Neuchâtel issued a variety of coins during the eighteenth century while the county was under Prussian administration. Forty batzen = four franken = one thaler and four kreuzer = one batzen. This type was also struck 1798-99.
