Steve Album sale 38, lot 3161

This specimen was lot 3161 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $71.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: Wilhelmina, 1890-1948, AR 10 cents, 1919, PCGS graded MS65." This type was struck 1910-20, 1928-30.The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1900's, the Dutch had conquered the profitable parts and the empire was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. However, their establishment of schools for the natives led to the rise of an educated elite eager for independence.
