SB121-24399r.jpg

This specimen was lot 24399 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. 1/10 Gulden, 1913. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. Wholly blast white and brilliant, this extremely argent minor presents dazzling eye appeal and stands as the single finest of the date seen at PCGS." This type was struck 1910-20 and 1928-30 and is common. The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1900's, the Dutch had conquered the profitable parts and the empire was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. However, their founding of schools for the natives led to the rise of an educated elite eager for independence.

Recorded mintage: 15,000,000.

Specification: 1.25 g, 0.720 fine silver, 15 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-311, Scholten 813.
