Netherlands East Indies 1891 1/10 gulden
This specimen was lot 72665 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. 1/10 Gulden, 1891. Utrecht Mint. William III. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. A wholesome, choice example of silver minor, offering pleasing steel gray surfaces and a hint of peripheral color." The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1900's, the Dutch had conquered the profitable parts and the empire was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. However, their founding of schools for the natives led to the rise of an educated elite eager for independence. This type was struck 1854-58, 1882-85, 1891-1900 and is common in all grades.
