Naples and Sicily 1752-MMR piastra Dav-1400
This specimen was lot 447 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €140 (about US$225 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1752. Carlos III (IV de Borbón). Nápoles. DeG-R. 1 piastra (120 grana). Escasa. BC+. (Charles III (IV), kingdom of Naples, piastra of 1752. Scarce, fine or better.)"
This type is listed for 1750-54 and is priced rather moderately, considering that it is seldom seen. The SCWC notes that 12 carlini = 6 tari = 1 piastra, where a piastra is roughly equal to a peso. Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's. Charles III, king of Naples and Sicily, gave up his crown to become king of Spain on the death of his half brother, Ferdinand VI, in 1759.
