This specimen was lot 1197 in Aureo y Calicó sale 447 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 130 € (about US$170 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1718. Carlos III, Pretender. Naples. 1 tari. Scarce. MBC [very fine]." Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown. Naples was awarded to Austria in 1714 while Sicily went to Savoy. The duke of Savoy was forced to trade Sicily for Sardinia in 1720 and the the two Sicilies were again united. The Charles depicted here is Charles VI of Austria, who died in 1740. Six tari = one piastra. This type was struck 1715-18 with a later small issue in 1731.
