Sincona sale 73, lot 1467

This specimen was lot 1467 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it sold for 275 CHF (about US$354 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Naples / Sicily. Carlo III. 1707-1734. Tari 1716, Neapel. Vorzüglich. Leicht justiert. (Italy, kingdom of Naples and Sicily, Charles III, 1707-34, tari of 1716, Naples mint. Extremely fine, Minor adjustment marks.)"

Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown. Naples was awarded to Austria in 1714 while Sicily went to Savoy. The duke of Savoy was forced to trade Sicily for Sardinia in 1720 and the two Sicilies were again united. However, the Austrians were not to hold it for long, as the Spanish returned and reconquered it for Charles, the younger son of Philip V, in 1734. The Charles depicted on this scarce one year type is Charles VI of Austria, who died in 1740. Six tari = one piastra.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.38 g, 0.833 fine silver, 25 mm diameter, this specimen 4.40 g.
