Munster 1702 2 thaler Dav-2463
This specimen was lot 30118 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $16,800. The catalog description[1] noted,
"German States. Münster. Friedrich Christian 2 Taler 1702 AU55 NGC, Münster mint. A significant rarity and certainly one of the toughest multiple Talers of Münster we've yet had the pleasure of handling. Wholly successful in its composition, with each detail of the Prince Bishop's portrait and coat of arms down to the tulip border and crown lining fully engraved and crisply struck upon the flan beneath. While the piece displays light porosity to the reverse that is likely the result of an imperfect planchet, this substantial emission remains charming on the hole, defined only by gentle handling to the highpoints of the bust. A quick survey reveals a near-complete paucity of examples to come to market in recent decades, making this the second representative to be offered at major auction and as such is likely to spur significant interest from German States collectors."
This is the only issue from this state in 1702. All of the ecclesiastical states were mediatized by Napoleon and handed over to his allies in 1800-06.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 47 mm diameter, 51.74 g.
