Mughal Empire AH 981 mohur Fr-722c
This specimen was lot 12302 in Ponterio sale 168 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $1,528. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Mohur, AH 981 (ca. 1573-74). PCGS VF-30 Secure Holder. Jala-ud-Din Akbar (1556-1605)." This type is listed from over forty mints in India. The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This type was struck in a round module (such as Fr-718a) or square module, shown here.
