Steve Album sale 51, lot 641

This specimen was lot 641 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Humayun, 1530-1556, AR light shahrukhi, Qandahar, AH951, somewhat lighter than usual for this type (average 2.90-3.00 g), no evidence of clipping or other attempted weight reduction, VF-XF, RR." The shahrukhi was originally a silver coin minted by Shah Rukh of the Timurid Empire (r. 1405-47) and was adopted by the early Mughal Emperors (Babur, Humayan and Akbar). It was eventually superseded by the rupee. Humayun (r. 1530-40 and 1555-56) was temporarily ousted from India by Sher Shah Suri.
