Steve Album sale 51, lot 2612

This specimen was lot 2612 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $48. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Aurangzeb, 1658-1707, AE paisa, Surat, AH1096, nice strike, VF." Aurangzeb succeeded Shah Jahan and, after eliminating his brothers, expanded the empire to its maximum extent. However, his intolerance of Hinduism sowed the seed for later revolts. His successors were not able to cope with external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war and the empire broke up in the eighteenth century. Surat struck this style intermittently years 12-44 along with 29 mints. One rupee was 64 paise.
