Sincona sale 77, lot 2458

This specimen was lot 2458 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,064 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA | Mughal Empire. Muhyi al-Din Muhammad Aurangzeb Alamgir, 1068-1118 H. (1658-1707). Mohur 1071 H.Year 3, Dar-al aman Multan. NGC MS64. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Magnificent condition.)" This type is listed from 63 mints in India with regnal years 1-4, 12, 24 and 29 for this mint. Aurangzeb succeeded Shah Jahan and, after eliminating his brothers, expanded the empire to its maximum extent. However, his intolerance of Hinduism sowed the seed for later revolts. His successors were not able to cope with external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war and the empire broke up in the eighteenth century.
