Mughal Empire AH 1048/12 rupee KM-235.6
This specimen was lot 663 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Jahan I, 1628-1658, AR rupee, Aurangabad, AH1048 year 12, extremely rare mint for Shah Jahan (common for Aurangzeb), known only dated year 12, XF, RRR. KM lists year 12 with Hijri year off flan, Zeno had AH1149 year 12 (1 pc), and this is the only one with clear date AH1148 and year 12. There are none on CoinArchives or acsearch." This is the only date reported from this mint for the type 235 rupee. The town was established in 1610 as Khaḍkī, then renamed Fatehnagar, then annexed to the Mughal Empire in 1636, then renamed Aurangabad in 1653 by Aurangzeb and made his capital. Only then did the town become a city.
