from Steve Album sale 45, lot 915

This specimen was lot 915 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Alam II, 1759-1806, AV mohur, Burhanpur, AH1179 year 6, M&W-T1a type, mint name as Dar us-Sarur Burhanpur, Shiva linga mint mark on reverse, a very rare type in lovely condition, PCGS graded AU55, RR." The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. By the reign of Shah Alam II, the emperor's realm barely stretched past the outskirts of the city of Delhi. The Burhanpur mint is not listed in the SCWC for this ruler.
