Steve Album sale 51, lot 2588

This specimen was lot 2588 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Jahan I, 1628-1658, AR rupee, Qandahar, year 5, month of Bahman, 3 testmarks, this is Qandahar in the Deccan, not in Afghanistan, very rare mint (none of this type on CoinArchives), Fine, RR." Shah Jahan is most remembered today for having built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his wife. His successors after Aurangzeb (r. 1658-1707) were not able to cope with external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war and the empire broke up in the eighteenth century. Qandahar struck this style years 5 and 11 dated with regnal years and without the AH date. Qandahar is now in Afghanistan.
