SA39-1813r.jpg

Abd al-Hafid proclaimed himself sultan in AH 1324 and seized the throne from his brother, but was not recognized by Western powers until some years later. Only three denominations were issued during his short reign. As with his two predecessors, his identity is only alluded to on the coins, without directly stating his name. Shown is a silver half rial or five dirhams from the Paris mint, dated AH 1329, or 1911 AD. The second specimen was lot 1813 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[2] noted, "MOROCCO: al-Hafiz, 1908-1912, 5 dirhams, Paris, AH1329, a lovely quality example! PCGS graded MS64."

Recorded mintage: 4,660,000.

Specifications: 12.50 g, 0.835 silver.

Catalog reference: KM Y24.
