Morocco AH 1244 benduqi
This specimen was lot 74318 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "MOROCCO. Benduqi, AH 1244 (1828). Fez Mint. 'Abd al-Rahman bin Hisham. NGC AU-55. Despite some striking weakness, this example is otherwise free from much in the way of actual handling. SCARCE and highly enchanting." Before the introduction of a modern coinage in 1882, Morocco issued copper coins denominated in falus, silver coins denominated in dirhams, and gold coins denominated in benduqis. This type was struck AH 1241-1261, 1267 and 1269 and has a low catalog value. It was probably intended to trade for a ducat.
