This specimen was lot 32048 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Montserrat: British Colonial 12 Dogs ND (1772-89) G6 PCGS. Countermarked with three Ms and a couped cross on a 1/4 cut of an 8 Reales. Deeply countermarked, nicely toned a dark slate and dove gray; an iconic and ever-popular colonial type which is seldom offered for sale. The present specimen is a pleasure to observe, and an excellent representative of the type." Montserrat, a British held sugar island in the lesser Antilles, suffered the same coin starvation as the other colonies in the Caribbean. Various Spanish colonial coins were cut and counterstamped in the late eighteenth century to slow the outflow, in denominations from one to forty "dogs". One dollar = eight bits = 48 dogs. We don't know when this was done, so the date range given is that of the host coins.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin before cutting: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 10.
